Refinement & Internalization

The Primary program serves children age three to six.  The plane of the Absorbent Mind is characterized by the time during which a child's mind is like a sponge, absorbing all that is within the environment.  Materials, lessons, and experiences within the Primary classroom are designed to compliment the sensitive periods for development of order, language acquisition, refinement of the senses, and movement.  Characterized by concrete thinking and fundamental formation of character, children endeavor to work independently within a structured environment doing real activities with an intelligent purpose and strive for independence: "I can do it myself!"

Freedom of Movement

We believe that children learn best when they are free to move their bodies throughout the day. Children have physical needs. They should not be constrained to desks. They are allowed to move around in their environment, visit the bathroom as often as they like, and work in a variety of sitting or standing positions. By allowing this freedom, we feel that this helps the growing brain learn more effectively.  We teach our children to respect others, themselves, and the environment, We encourage this independence, but also teach respect for others. No one's freedom should infringe upon another's right to concentrate.

Celebration of Uniqueness

Children are unique individuals who are not likely to master the exact same concepts or have the same interests at the same time. We celebrate this uniqueness and allow each child to develop at his or her pace. We believe that learning is a natural process that develops spontaneously.

Multi-Age Classrooms

We have multi-age classrooms. All Primary classrooms have children ranging from ages 3 to 6 years old. This provides the opportunity for the young child for social and academic guidance. The older child in turn gains a sense of responsibility and a high level of self esteem. We also get to know your child on a deeper level as we watch them grow and learn throughout the three year cycle.

Like all preschools, our program requires a degree of independence from students in order for them to have a positive experience.  Even though each of our Primary classrooms is well staffed with a lead teacher and two assistants, students need to be able to manage many self-care tasks on their own.  In general, children enrolled in our Primary program should be able to feed and dress themselves as well as be independent in the toileting process.  By this we mean that students can manage their bathrooming needs independently, and that they have been accident-free for at least one month prior to enrollment at Free Horizon Montessori.  Our Primary program is licensed by the Colorado Department of Human Services as a preschool.  As such, we are not permitted to have diapers or disposable underwear at school - including at nap time.

In general, children starting preschool should be able to work and play independently for short periods, to focus on one task or project for several minutes, to follow simple instructions, and to sit still for a few minutes for lessons and circle time.
