About the FHM Board of Directors

Board Structure & Leadership

• Composition: Governed by an 8-member Board of Directors (BOD)—7 parent/community members elected or appointed for 3-year terms, plus the Principal (ex-officio, non-voting).

• Attendees: Meetings include the FHM Staff Liaison(s) 

• Scope & Privacy: The Board sets school policy, ensures charter and legal compliance, and represents the parent community.

• Monthly Meetings: The BOD meets monthly. Meetings are open to the public, and community members are welcome to speak per the policy:
  
   

  The board welcomes public comment and values the opportunity to
  hear from families, staff, and members of the public.
   

  Public Comment Procedures
  ● Speakers are generally provided up to three (3) minutes.
  ● Speakers will be called in an order determined by the Board President or presiding officer.
  ● Comments should be directed to the Board as a whole.
  ● Speakers are expected to communicate respectfully and may not materially disrupt the meeting.
  ● Public comment is an opportunity for the Board to listen. Board members generally will not
  respond to questions or engage in discussion during public comment.
  ● Concerns involving individual students, employees, personnel matters, or confidential information
  should be addressed through the appropriate school complaint, grievance, or administrative
  process.
  ● Written comments may be submitted to any Board member via email.
  The Board President or presiding officer may make reasonable adjustments to these procedures based
  on the number of speakers, available meeting time, or other circumstances.

Committees: Parents and community volunteers support the Board through specialized committees (finance, facilities, etc.)

The Board has a standing invitation for select school staff to actively participate in Board meetings. These staff members keep the Board informed of school and staff activities and are a conduit of communication back to the staff.

If you wish to make requests, presentations or proposals to the Board, direct any inquiry to the Principal or the Board President who will assist in getting your request on the agenda and get back to you with the date and time of the meeting. If you have specific actions you would like the Board to take, it is best to put these in writing and email or deliver them to the Board President or any other Board member to present to the Board. They will consider the request and respond to you by the next Board meeting with actions they can take or alternative recommendations.

Elections for the Board of Directors are held at the FHM Annual Meeting, scheduled each year in April. New members can be appointed to open positions throughout the year through a majority vote of the Board. The Board seeks individuals with a passion for Free Horizon Montessori as potential candidates to help the Board continue the mission and vision of our school.

The Free Horizon Montessori Board of Directors is committed to open, transparent, and accessible governance. Board meetings and committee meetings are conducted in compliance with the Colorado Open Meetings Law.

Regular Board Meetings

The Board holds its regular meetings on the second Thursday of each month from 6:00–9:00 p.m. Regular Board meetings are open to the public, and we welcome families, staff, and members of the broader FHM community to attend, learn more about the work of the Board, and stay engaged with our school.

Regular meetings are typically held in person at Free Horizon Montessori. During the winter months, Board meetings will be held virtually.

Public Comment

Each regular Board meeting includes an opportunity for public comment, providing members of the public a designated time to share comments with the Board.

Board Work Sessions

From time to time, the Board may schedule work sessions to allow additional time for discussion, planning, training, or in-depth review of specific topics.

Work sessions are open to the public, but the Board does not take formal action or vote during these sessions. Dates and details for upcoming work sessions will be posted on the FHM School Calendar.

Board Committees

Much of the Board's ongoing work takes place through its committees. FHM currently has the following Board committees:

• Visibility & Growth Committee

Committee meetings are open to the public. Committees do not take formal Board action; recommendations requiring Board approval are brought to the full Board for consideration.

Get Involved

Parent participation is an important part of every FHM Board committee, and we need parents to serve. You do not need to be a Board member to participate.

Serving on a committee is a meaningful way to lend your experience and expertise, better understand the work happening across FHM, and help shape the future of our school.
