Children reading outdoorsThe Importance of Keeping Minds Engaged

Each school year brings an incredible amount of learning.  Most educators are familiar with "summer slide," the term that refers to the phenomena of many children resuming school in the fall having regressed in some of their academic skills.  In order to prevent that from happening, we hope all families will support students in keeping their minds, bodies, and imaginations active during the summer months so that they return to school in office with their minds sharp and in the hopes of stepping in where they left off in May.

We also recognize and support the need for learning to look different during the summer and encourage all students to engage in the following "assignments" throughout the summer:

  • Enroll in the Public Library's Summer Reading Program - By keeping a reading log, children can earn a free book at the end of the summer.  Please plan to bring your reading logs in at the start of the school year to celebrate all the reading completed during the summer.  The Jefferson County Public LIbrary has different programs for children, teens, and adults - so parents can join the fun if they wish!  Check out information by clicking here.

  • Grow Practical Life Skills by Completing Family Chores Daily - Even very young children are quite capable of contributing to the family life by taking responsibility for chores.  The key is providing opportunities that are appropriate for each child's age and development.  Children experience great satisfaction and pride when they feel their work makes a difference for the family.  As a bonus, all those chores build coordination, increase concentration, foster independence, and support muscle development.  Click here for a compilation of lists by age levels.

  • Play Summer Fun Bingo - Click here to print a Summer Fun Bingo card and record the dates you complete each activity.  Get a bingo?  Go for another!  Get a few?  See if you can get a black out!  Have your child bring their completed Summer Fun Bingo card to school in fall.
